Understanding Oral Mucositis

Oral mucositis is a severely debilitating condition characterized by erythema, edema, and ulcerations of
the oral mucosa.

A significant (40–100%) number of head and neck cancer patients receiving RT or CT develop mucositis.

Mucositis and its management play a prominent role in the success of cancer treatment.

Causes severe pain, difficulty in eating, reduced nutrition, weight loss, therapy delays, hospitalization, expenses, and life-threatening infections.

Affects motivation and compliance to therapy and may lead to discontinuation of chemotherapy or radiation therapy due to uncontrolled symptoms and pain.
